Czech people have long been known for their quality work and attention to detail. The Czech Republic is home to famous artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Antonín Dvořák, and Božena Němcová, all of whom are remembered for their talent as well as the high quality of their work. This high quality, however, is not limited to famous figures of the past. Magnificent craftsmanship and impeccable attention to detail are alive and well in the Czech Republic and can still be witnessed today in various shops, bakeries, and, around the holidays, at the Christmas markets.
The Czech craftsmen, woodworkers, and bakers have provided the city with delightful treats and trinkets for many years. An excellent place to glimpse some of this intricate Czech craftsmanship is at the Christmas markets which pop up every year in The Czech Republic around November and remain open until January.
Here you can see countless wooden stalls and stands whose warm light floods onto the cold streets. Each stand offering its own insight into Czech holiday traditions and history. Some of the stands are filled with glittering ornaments in frosty whites and opulent red tones while others have baskets full of carefully decorated gingerbread cookies and nutcracker shaped chocolates on display.
Pedestrians can enjoy the unique crafts and treats, which make for lovely gifts, and the festive atmosphere. The stands are often adorned with glimmering lights which reflect on the slick gray cobblestones and invite passer-by’s to stop in and have a look.
You can find stands selling handmade Christmas decorations, such as ornaments, which dangle in brilliant purple and royal blue shades, or stalls offering hot tea and mulled wine which has been simmered to perfection. You will also see unique and lovable dolls, painted cups, carved wooden souvenirs, colorful candies, and roasted bratwursts.
From glass blown treehoppers and handmade ornaments to delicately decorated cookies and gingerbreads, the Czech Christmas markets are full of examples of the Czech skill and tradition. The craftsmen of the Czech Republic are a large part of the national identity and of the rich history of the Bohemian regions. We love the Czech Christmas markets for their variety, their festive atmosphere, and their delightful treats, but especially for the opportunity to see so many different Czech trades and traditions exemplified and displayed in the various stalls.
