Sloupský Hrad or Rock Castle is an amazing medieval castle located in the small town of Sloup v Čechách, Czech Republic. The country is known for their beautiful architecture and historic castles, but also for the incredible land and natural landscapes. This huge sandstone rock formation known as rock castle, Sloup is a perfect example of just that.
The word Sloup means “column” and it was named that not after the town of Sloup , but due to the interesting shape. The rock surprisingly does have the look of a castle with many columns and peaks. However, the interesting thing is that it never functioned as a castle but rather as a hiding place and religious retreat.
This awesome rock stands 35 meters high and is 100 meters long and 60 meters wide. Though there are no big treasures inside the “castle” except a small museum and a simple church, it is a great place to go to view the surrounding woods and to connect to the beauty of the area. An interesting feature is the stairway which is carved out of the rock.
