Kantýna, Prague – A Meat Lovers Dream

Kantýna (Canteen) is a modern Czech restaurant with a cool and tasty spin on a traditional Czech neighborhood pub/butcher’s shop concept. When you arrive at their beautiful location, just a 10 minute walk from Old Town Square, you are greeted by a hostess and given a menu/score paper which you are to use for ordering.

Inside, there are many places to sit with three full dining rooms and a stand up bar. The fact that it’s almost always packed full makes it best to just quickly snatch any available seat at one of their many tables.

Now here’s the part where you get your food: On the scoreboard you are given at the entrance, you write down what you would like to eat and cross out however many beers you’ll drink. (It’s the Czech Republic, remember!) Then, you head over to their meat counter where you actually get to pick out the slab of meat you want. They will cut it and weigh it, and then you tell them how you want it cooked. Once finished, they will serve it to you as soon as it gets off the skillet.

Our Kantýna smells of craftsmanship and the fire on which we cook our meat.

Their slogan, written above the ordering counter is “Vy si vyberete, my to ugrilujeme!” which translates to “You choose it, we grill it!” This is (based one reviews) apparently the best new meat-and-potatoes style place in town. They also serve more classic Czech fare such as potato pancakes and even sweet pastries.

Kantýna is truly a great new local spot, especially for meat lovers! The food is great and it’s a perfect place to meet all kinds of funky people. Just remember, most of the staff do not speak English so it is better to bring your English-to-Czech dictionary to this one!
