Bohemian Switzerland (České Švýcarsko and also known as Czech Switzerland) is a National Park in the Czech Republic which is part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are a mountain range surrounding the Elbe river on the border between Czech Republic and Germany.
‘Wow’ is the only word I can find to describe the beautiful terrain you’ll find here! When looking at pictures of its deep canyons and thick forests, some may actually find it hard to believe that this is located in the Czech Republic, but low and behold it is.
The Czech Republic has so many beautiful landscapes, ranging from rolling countrysides, Baroque cities, to this wild and wonderful natural territory.
Beautiful Prague is not the only beauty in the Czech Republic!
There are so many huge rock formations. One of the most unique and popular one of Bohemian Switzerland is Pravčická Brána, a large arch shaped sandstone.
When the sun hits it just right it almost looks like a bridge or gate to heaven.
After hiking to the top of the mountain where the rock is, you can stroll beneath the rock and actually get a chance to see it’s massiveness, or you can enjoy a meal in their restaurant located in a historic chateau.
This is definitely the place to go if you enjoy taking photographs as the views are breathtaking, especially in the romantic morning fog. It’s also a very romantic place for hiking. They have trails for all levels of hikers, some through more wooded areas and others along winding rivers.
Along the hiking trails you can also discover forgotten paths and try rock climbing on some of their signature sandstone rocks. Some of the rocks are shaped like intricate castles and among these rocks stand real castles as well, built during medieval times to guard the trade routes which one ran here.
Absolutely majestic.
If you are in the area, make sure to cross the border to Saxon Switzerland National Park in Germany and check out the Bastei Bridge as well. It is a century old bridge made to connect the 194 meter high rocks. There you can enjoy the most gorgeous views of the Elbe river and walk through the carved out rocks.
