The following illustrations for Three White Roses are created by the very talented Zdeňka Krejčová (b. 1944). The story is by Beneš Metod Kulda (1820 – 1903).
A translation of the folk tale will be forthcoming, but for now here are some lovely illustrations.
Three White Roses
Collecting the roses.
Three beautiful girls.
Beneš was a patriotic priest, writer and collector of folk songs and tales. I’m so grateful for his stories and that he wrote them all down for future generations.
He graduated from high school in Jihlava and since 1839 he studied philosophy and theology in Brno, where his teachers were Klácel, Beda Dudík and Frantisek Susil.
In 1845 he was ordained a priest and became a chaplain in Židlochovice, later in Brno.
Several times he stayed in Rožnově, where he began collecting folk stories, rhymes and songs. He participated in the establishment of the “Legacy Vol. Cyril and Methodius” in the years 1851-1860 edited calendar “Moravian”.
In the years 1859-1870 he served as pastor in Chlum u Sedlčan and in 1864 he was elected to the Czech Provincial Assembly.
In the years 1865-1893 published in Olomouc variety of religious pamphlets, sermons and occasional writings. From 1870 he was a canon of the Vysehrad chapter and inspector of different schools.
In later years, he suffered from waning vision to complete blindness and had eventually had to dictate texts.
Kulda published dozens of books and wrote hundreds of articles in various journals, He published several collections of folk tales, nursery rhymes and songs. A keeper of history, he described the wedding customs to Rožnovsko and published several collections of sermons. The National Library of the Czech Republic has 184 book titles recorded under his name.
Zdenka studied at the Academy of Arts under Professor Karel Kratochvil. Besides actively working as an illustrator and independent art work, she also focuses on filmmaking and teaches. She lives and works in Prague. You can see some of her work Ikaros Gallery.
