What are you going to be when you grow up? Well, in 1960 in Czechoslovakia, you had some interesting choices as we can see by these lovely illustrations from the very talented illustrator Luděk Vimr ( July 5, 1921 – 9 November 2005 ).
Ludek was a Czech painter , graphic artist and illustrator . He graduated from the Prague School of Applied Arts and graduated under professor Frantisek Muzika. Ludek illustrated more than 40 titles, working mostly with children’s books and textbooks. He primarily collaborated with the Albatros publishing house.
This book was printed by the state in 1960 and it showed young children some of their career options.
At first one dreams of what they will become.
Perhaps they will want to take flight.
And become a pilot.
Or one may become a gardener.
Or with all of the beautiful flowers, a florist!
Maybe one can be an engine driver. After all, there are a lot of trams and trains!
Keeping a city clean requires a sweep.
And hungry folks always look for a cook.
Maybe you will want to go far, so you’ll become a traveler.
And you will see places near and far.
And because those who travel require fuel, there is always a need for fuel or gas station attendants.
Because all manner of vehicles require fuel to make them go.
If you are athletic, you may go on to become a soccer player.
And just as our streets and sidewalks need to be clean, so do our skies – so you may consider becoming a chimney sweep!
Because we don’t want all of that pollution!
And someone needs to build the homes we live in, so we need bricklayers, stone masons and builders.
Seamstresses and Tailors make the clothes that cover our bodies.
And to make our city and buildings more beautiful, we need sculptors and artists.
We need people to deliver all of our correspondences, so you may want to be a mail carrier.
Because we need to communicate with one another.
And if you like to add a splash of color to things, maybe you’ll grow up to become a painter.
And when you paint with yellow, remember this…
When you paint with yellow
paint the sun
so that it will always shine golden.
