The following vintage Czech cookbook illustrations are from my cookbook, Česká Kuchařka from 1969. Yes, it has been in our family all those years. It was my grandmothers, then my mothers, mine and soon my daughters. It’s filled with over 500 delicious Czech recipes which make for some amazing dinners to please our friends and impress our guests. But today I wanted to share one of the things I love most about this cookbook, the illustrations.
The illustrations are by Zdeněk Mézl (born 1934), a Czech printmaker, principally known for his illustrations. He studied at the College of Applied Arts between 1949–1953 and later graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. Mézl has illustrated several books using traditional woodcut engraving. Among his published books are A Battle for Cathedral or Hey, Slavs!
These are from my cookbook. I hope you enjoy them.
