Jen Osborne is an independent documentary photographer. The primary goal of her work is to share important feature stories about the rest of the world, in this case the Ukraine. Jen’s work has a social aspect and has been published in several leading magazines.
In July 2015, Jen started a new body of work documenting many of Ukraine’s female soldiers. She’s on a mission to report on these women, to tell their stories and counter some of the misrepresentation women face in the media.
Being women ourselves, we felt it was important to share her work and let the world know what the lives of women soldiers look like.
So many of these women are so young, and it’s quite shocking to see them in fatigues.
Ukraine had a revolution in 2013, which started as a peaceful protest in favor of ties with the European Union, until it quickly spun into an anti-government revolution. The situation escalated and escalated, and has now turned into a civil war between Pro Russians and Pro Ukrainians.
There is a line in East Ukraine, where these two sides stake their places, and it attracts soldiers of all ages and training levels to fight for their territory. Some of these soldiers are volunteers, risking their lives for no payment. And, some of these soldiers are women.
Women and girls, just like you and me. Watch Jen’s video!
Jen’s goal is to shed light upon the under-reported stories of female soldiers in East Ukraine, and we hope you’ll pin and share her info!
Looking at their faces, they look like they should be students, interns, going on dates or shopping. Instead, these beautiful ladies are fighting for their lives and for what they believe in.
Who are these young woman? Why are they there? What’s it like for them?
Jen will document whether these women want to avenge the deaths of their loved ones, fight against corruption, or live alongside their husbands and family members who are also fighting.
Her goal is to help us understand how such conflicts effect the women and their families.
Sadly, most media sees women in the military as “G.I. Jane’s” as portrayed by Demi Moore in Hollywood. But the reality is far from fantasy. It’s dangerous and deadly.
Jen created a short message where she explains her idea in a video that we urge you to watch.
